About Judge Leonard
Judge Robert “Rob” D. Leonard II
Judge Leonard was appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to the Superior Court of Cobb County in November of 2012 and was subsequently elected by the voters of Cobb County to retain that position. Immediately preceding his appointment to Superior Court, Judge Leonard was serving on the bench in the State Court of Cobb County. He was appointed to that position by Governor Sonny Perdue in 2010 and was later elected to retain that position.
Prior to taking the bench, Judge Leonard maintained his law practice in Marietta where he employed 11 people practicing primarily in criminal law and civil litigation.
Judge Leonard received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Kentucky.
As a member of the Council of Superior Court Judges, Judge Leonard serves or has served on the following committees: Accountability and Treatment Courts, Indigent Defense, Uniform Rules, Court Technology, Bench & Bar and Pattern Jury Instructions.
Judge Leonard has been involved in many bar-related activities including: Current Trustee-at-Large, Current Chair of the Bench and Bar Committee, Past-President of the Cobb County Criminal Law Section of the Bar, Vice-President of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, President of the Younger Lawyers Section of the Cobb Bar, former member of the Board of Trustees of the Cobb Bar and also served on various committees for the bar. He is also a member of the Marietta Lawyers Club and the Atlanta Lawyers Club.
Judge Leonard also recognizes the importance of helping young people with interest in the legal profession. He is active in both high school and collegiate mock trial competitions as both an evaluator and a presiding Judge.
Awards and Recognition
Judge Leonard was recognized as a “Georgia Super Lawyer Rising Star” for three consecutive years, from 2009 to 2011 prior to taking the bench. He was the 2006 recipient of the Ross Adams Award given out by the Cobb County Bar Association. In 2009, he won the “Greatest Trial Victory of the Year” award. Judge Leonard was featured in Cobb Life’s “Top 20 under 40” publication. Judge Leonard was also featured in the Fulton County Daily Report’s “On The Rise – Top 40 Under 40″ publication.
Judge Leonard is a frequent speaker at Continuing Legal Education courses for judges and lawyers on subjects ranging from criminal law, domestic relations, evidence, ethics and professionalism. Judge Leonard enjoys talking to young lawyers about the importance of integrity and professionalism in the practice of law. He was invited to lecture on professionalism as a keynote speaker for incoming law students as part of the Chief Justice’s Committee on Professionalism.
Currently, Judge Leonard serves as Vice-Chair on the Board of Directors for Nobis Works, a non-profit organization that provides job training and placement for people with disabilities. He is also involved in the Chamber of Commerce and is an alumnus of the Leadership Cobb Class of 2013. He is also a former member of the Marietta Kiwanis Club and has volunteered his time at numerous local non-profit organizations such as the Calvary Children’s Home, American Cancer Society, and MUST Ministries. He speaks to local youth groups and schools about the impact of how these young people’s choices today will impact them for the entirety of their lives and making responsible choices on social media. He also invites school groups and Girl and Boy Scout troops to the courthouse to conduct mock trials and learn about the court system.
He enjoys the the outdoors and spending time his wife, three children and their crazy black labs.
